This year’s Emile Awards statuette pays tribute to Witold Giersz, the acclaimed Polish animation filmmaker whose fascination with horses is evident throughout his work.
The wooden blocks used for the statuettes were hewn with an axe, a detail that also alludes to the simple, swift strokes of the palette knife Giersz employs during his creative process. Intended to symbolize an attunement to nature and its laws, the statuette, rather than being crafted into uniform, polished blocks, reveals the inherent, natural beauty of the wood’s grain.
Crafted from exotic African iroko wood, it features a distinctive pattern that, when the wood is split, creates a texture reminiscent of a horse’s coat, mane and tail.
The statuette’s form is inspired by the shape of a horse’s leg.
